05-11-2014: The five-day Experts’ Meet for preparing the glossary of scientific and technical terms of Botany in Dogri being held at Govt. Degree College Udhampur concluded today.  Organised by the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology ( CSTT), Dept. of Higher Education , Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India in collaboration with Dept. of Botany of the host College, this meet was attended by experts from various fields of Botany and Languages. These include: Sh. O P Sharma Vidyarthi IFS CCF, Prof. B.R Bamniya, HoD Environmental Sciences Udaipur University, Dr.  Yash Pal Sharma, Professor of Botany from Jammu University, Dr. Raman Kesar, Botanist &  Chief Executive  Officer PDA,  Sh. Prakash Premi , a renowned linguist & Dogri expert, Prof. Romesh Kumar Atri, HoD Botany of the host college, Prof. Sudhir Singh & Sh. Sham Lal Agnihotri.

A host of deliberations were held in the meeting over five days to understand the technical terms of Botany, finding the Dogri equivalent & coinage of fresh words, if needed,  to enrich the corpus of existing vocabulary.  300 technical terms were taken up and translated/coined in Dogri.

Dr. Dharmender Kumar Deputy Director CSTT expressed his gratitude to all the experts for active participation in the meeting and its successful conclusion. He also expressed his gratitude to the College for providing all the logistic support for the meeting. “ It has been a great experience to organize programme here & I hope that in future also the same magnitude of support is provided by all the experts and this organization,” he added. Principal of the College Prof. S.S Bhalwal said that this College is committed to provide a platform for deliberations on such crucial endeavors.  “It is a rare opportunity when intellectuals in this number sit together to contribute towards Dogri language,” he added.

This endeavor of CSTT would  address the dire need of offering  education in Dogri medium for those students who are unable to cope up with the linguistic challenges. Dr. Dharmender Kumar Deputy Director CSTT ,while speaking on the occasion threw light on the mandate of CSTT and its activities. “ The challenges posed by the barriers of the foreign language deter the transaction of whole knowledge to the target audience. Information and knowledge of one language must be transmitted to other languages. And translation is the best way out,” he added.
